The Four Seasons and Court Attire of Hikami Shrine
39
At Hikami Shrine, the role of head priestess is held by a female descendant in the direct line of the Sun Goddess, Amaterasu Omikami; this represents the *hime* (female) side of the ancient *hime-hiko* dual-rule system. The principal deity, Himiko-sama (Yamato-toto-hi-momoso-hime), is also a deity of war. Because many rulers have lost their lives after incurring her divine wrath, the Imperial Court fears the shrine as a "shadow court" that secretly controls the nation. Despite this dark aspect, the shrine appears outwardly ordinary, save for its high status within the Imperial Court. Reflecting this unique background, the images here showcase the shrine's colorful facets interwoven with the four seasons.
