[The Smell of Grilled Salmon in My Hometown] I woke up before my alarm, to the smell of grilled salmon. It was the morning after I returned home. When I went to the kitchen, the morning sun was shining on the old wooden chair. My mother served me miso soup and said, "Serve your own rice." She took out a bowl with a chipped rim from the back of the cupboard. Even though there were new ones, my hand chose it without hesitation. The omelet was slightly sweet, and the salmon skin was well-grilled. Last night I only talked about work as she asked, but this morning I heard about how the trees in the garden had grown. When my bowl was empty, my mother opened the rice cooker lid without asking a question.
