Ryoma and Oryo - Kirishima, a honeymoon amidst the steam

Spring, 1866 (Keio 2). Having been wounded in the Teradaya Incident, Sakamoto Ryoma and his wife, Oryo, embarked on a journey to Satsuma. Their destination was Shiojimari Onsen, deep in the mountains of Kirishima. The gentle murmur of the river, the chirping of birds, the white steam rising from the lush green valley. Even Ryoma, who raced through the turbulent end of the Edo period, must have had moments like this, laughing peacefully with his beloved wife. This journey later became widely known as "Japan's first honeymoon." This time, I've tried to depict Ryoma and Oryo's trip to Kirishima in a colorful, dramatic style, reflecting on their experience. A simple happiness for a couple amidst the great currents of history.
